Three decades of armed conflict led to large-scale destruction of social and industrial infrastructure and also impeded the development of agriculture in the Republic of Angola. In addition, Angola became one of the countries with the largest number of active mines in the world.
Swiss Humanitarian Aid was present in Angola for 12 years, from 1995 to 2006. In this time it helped to rebuild infrastructure and supported local populations during emergencies.
At the moment the Swiss embassy in Angola is implementing the Social and Humanitarian Program Angola - Switzerland. This program is based on a bilateral agreement concluded in 2005 and is part of the process of the return to the Republic of Angola of funds that were frozen In Switzerland.
According to the bilateral agreement between Angola and Switzerland, signed on 1 November 2005 in Geneva, Switzerland will return funds amounting to USD 21 Million to the Republic of Angola: press release
